第35回　「なぞなぞ」は頭の体操

　新年を迎えると、みんななにかを誓う。タバコをやめようと思ってもやめられなかった人は元旦に禁煙を誓う。なかには禁酒を誓う人もいるであろう。新しい年を迎えれば、だれだって新鮮な気持ちになり、決意を新たにしてなにかを誓うのである。

　しかし、どんなことを誓っても、それを持続して守れないのが人の常である。ぼくはいまでこそタバコを吸っていないが、何十年間も禁煙の誓いを守れなかったのである。自虐的になり、My New Year's resolution is to start giving up giving up. というジョークをなんど繰り返してきたであろうか。

　さて、この連載でなんどか「なぞなぞ」を紹介してきたが、年の初めにあたり、それこそ初心にかえって、なぞなぞを楽しんではいかがだろうか。なぞなぞはことばの遊びであり、頭の体操にもなる。そして、子どもだけではなく、大人もなぞなぞを楽しむ。英語圏の国々で購入する大人向けのジョークの本には数多くのなぞなぞが含まれている。

　更にいえば、なぞなぞがユーモア感覚のベースになっているのではないかと思うのである。英語を母語とする人たちは数多くのジョークをいつでも使えるようにストックしているが、小さいころから、多種多様ななぞなぞに触れたことが契機になっているのではないかと思うのである。

　以下になぞなぞをいくつか紹介しよう。

　初級、中級、上級と便宜的に分けてあるが、これにこだわらず、楽しんでいただきたい。なぞなぞなので、日本語訳を省略させていただいた。日本語訳をつけると、なぞなぞのおもしろさが半減してしまうのである。

★初級編

Q: Which bet can you never win?
A: The alphabet.

Q: What dog smells onions?
A: A hot dog.

Q: Where do ants eat?
A: In a restaur-ant.

Q: What letter stands for a drink?
A: The letter T.

★中級編

Q: What's the best day to eat fish and chips?
A: Fry-day.

Q: What kind of cans are there in Mexico?
A: Mexicans.

Q: What do you call a man who makes loudspeakers?
A: Mike.

Q: What room has no floors, no walls, and no windows?
A: A mushroom.

Q: What musical instrument never tells the truth?
A: A lyre.

Q: What do you call a jacket that's on fire?
A: A blazer.

Q: What letter is most in debt?
A: O.

Q: Which President was the cleanest?
A: Wash-ington.

★上級編

　柳田國男は著書『なぞとことわざ』のなかで、「なぞなぞは若い人たちをかしこくする教育の一つであった」と述べている。なぞなぞ遊びで、ことばやユーモアの感覚を身につけようではありませんか。
