  • What is IELTS for UKVI
  • IELTS for UKVI(IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration)is a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for visa applications, both work and study-abroad, to the UK.
  • What is IELTS Life Skills
    IELTS Life Skills is for individuals applying for UK visas to show that they have speaking and listening skills at Level A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of References for Languages.

  • The Eiken Foundation of Japan has received certification for implementation of the IELTS for UKVI, which requires higher security, and will begin offering the test from April 2021.
The IELTS for UKVI administered by Eiken foundation of Japan is a paper-based test. If you would like to take the Computer-Delivered IELTS for UKVI, please apply from the British Council.

Basic Information

Test Modules; IELTS for UKVI

IELTS for UKVI  Academic Module
This test is required for individuals pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree, or those wishing to work in the UK. The test is comprised of 4 sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

IELTS for UKVI  General Training Module
This test is required for individuals who are moving to the UK or those pursuing vocational training or study at a level below a bachelor’s degree. The test is comprised of 4 sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

IELTS Life Skills A1
For people applying for a visa to remain with a relative, spouse, or partner already living in the UK permanently-“family of a settled person” visas. This proves their speaking and listening ability and takes between 16-18 minutes.

※A1 level:  Level set by the CEFR (Common European Frame of Reference) and is equivalent to ESOL Entry 1 of the National Qualification Framework (NQF).

IELTS Life Skills B1
For people applying for British citizenship as well as those who are already living in the UK and wish for permanent residency-indefinite leave to remain and citizenship. This proves their speaking and listening ability and takes around 22 minutes.

※B1 level:  Level set by the CEFR (Common European Frame of Reference) and is equivalent to ESOL Entry 3 of the National Qualification Framework (NQF).


Please note that if you pass IELTS Life Skills, you cannot retake it for a period of three years.
If you mistakenly applied Life Skills between you have passed within three years, your application will be cancelled and you will be charged a cancellation fee of ¥5,250.

Registration and Test Fees

Test Fees (per individual per test session ) 
IELTS for UKVI (Academic・General) ・・・ 29,400 JPY(tax inclusive)
IELTS Life Skills (A1・B1) ・・・ 20,500 JPY (tax inclusive)
 ※It is the responsibility of the test-taker to decide which IELTS to register and take. The test centre cannot accept any changes to the type of test nor offer refunds for any errors made when registering.

Application Deadlines
IELTS for UKVI (Academic・General)  Deadline is 0:30 A.M., 6 days prior to the test day.
IELTS Life Skills (A1・B1)   Deadline is 0:00 A.M. (midnight), 3 days prior to the test day.
e.g.)  If the exam is held on Saturday, the application will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. 

If you make your registration on the day of the application deadline, please complete the payment at the same timing as your registration. Note that the final deadline for your payment is 12:00 p.m. of the application deadline date. If the payment is not completed by then, the application will be canceled.

Cancellations to your IELTS test registration can be made until the day before the test by notifying your test centre. Refund terms depend upon when you cancel, and a handling fee will be deducted from the registration fee. Furthermore, if the following exceptional measures apply, and if the application is approved by the test centre, a refund or change of test date may be permitted.

In the following special cases, a refund or change of test date may be permitted by submitting the necessary certification and application forms.

・Serious illness (Common cold and/or stomachaches do not qualify)
・In the event that a relative within the third degree of kinship has passed away
※ Please be sure to submit original documents, such as a medical certificate from the hospital and/or a funeral notification, within 5 days from the test date.

Cancellations will not be accepted nor will refunds be made after the cancellation deadline.

・ The test start time will vary depending on the examinee. In addition, the time for each examinee is specified by the test centre and can not be changed.

What to bring on  the test day

※There are many instances of candidates forgetting to bring a coloured copy of their registered passport. Please make sure to bring a coloured copy of the pertinent passport page.

Make a coloured copy of your passport (real-sized, double spread with your headshot photo on A4-sized paper) and add your test date and full name on the right side as shown below.

※A valid passport as well as a coloured copy of the passport on A4-sized paper is necessary for registering. Please refer to the example above on how to make a copy of your passport.

※Watches and clocks of any kind, including wristwatches, are not permitted. Please refer to the clock in the test room.
※Pencil sharpeners and tissue paper are provided in the test room.

An official Test Report Form will be sent out 13 days after the test date for IELTS for UKVI, and next Wednesday after the test date for IELTS Life Skills. If the above days are national holidays, test results will be sent the following business day.

Cost of Issuing Additional Test Report Forms

The cost for sending Additional Test Report Forms up to five organizations, within one month after the results release date (13 days after the test date) is as follows.:
※ Life Skills cannot beissued AdditionalTestReport Forms.

  • Regular mail/Electronic – Free
  • Registered (EMS) mail – 1,600 JPY per each Test Report Form.

The cost for sending Additional Test Report Forms to more than five organizations or any requests more than one month of issuing the original Test Report Form is as follows.:

  • Regular mail/Electronic – Postage is free, but a handling charge of 1,100 JPY per Test Report Form will be charged.

Candidates can apply for an Enquiry On Results (remarking) if they feel that the test results are incorrect. Candidates can choose to have one or more parts of their test re-marked.
Fees for EOR are as below.
An administrative fee of 15,000 JPY which should be prepaid, will be charged for this service, but should the result(s) change after the Enquiry on Results, the full amount will be refunded only if the applicant for remarking designates a bank account in Japan as the account to which such refund should be made. Please note that it takes about 3 weeks (or more) for re-marking.

  • IELTS for UKVI、IELTS Life Skills 15,000 JPY (tax inclusive)

How is my IELTS test different if I take it for UK visa purposes?
A

The IELTS test for UK visa purposes is designed to meet certain administrative requirements that are only specified by UK Visas and Immigration. Test Report Forms will be slightly different, to show that test takers have taken the test at an IELTS UK visa session. The actual test taken is the same – same content, examiners, format, level of difficulty, scoring and so on.

How often can I re-take IELTS or IELTS Life Skills?
A

There are no restrictions on retaking IELTS. You can register for a test as soon as you feel you are ready to do so.
If you pass IELTS Life Skills, you cannot retake it for a period of two years.
If you do not pass it, there are no restrictions on retaking the test.
