Issues of budget allocation are always contentious, but it is my firm belief that the Japanese government must actively pursue a policy of providing more financial aid to foreign countries in need. Economic stability, soft power, and goodwill are among the rewards Japan will reap by doing so.
Firstly, foreign aid provides stability to the recipient nation. This is not only a moral imperative, as it reduces death and human suffering, but also a practical one. By addressing famine or disease, for instance, unrest can be reduced, stimulating local economies. In our globalized era, these benefits will also be felt in Japan.
Additionally, providing more foreign aid would be an opportunity for Japan to increase its soft power around the world. By befriending the people of foreign nations, Japan's global presence will strengthen. In the long term, this could lead to alliances that allow Japan to better realize its goals on the world stage.
Finally, increasing foreign aid would create a wellspring of goodwill towards Japan. By providing aid to those in need, Japan is more likely to receive such aid when the shoe is on the other foot. Given the uncertain nature of the modern age, such insurance is not to be underestimated.
To conclude, the Japanese government would do both itself and the world at large a great service by increasing the funding it dedicates to foreign aid. Only through unity with others can we ensure a bright future.
